Money is by no means the solution to the problem facing the Uyghur people. No money is able to enter East Turkestan and be delivered to the native Uyghur people due to the Chinese government's heavy restrictions.
Thousands of Uyghurs have fled East Turkestan and ended up in countries such as Turkey and Australia. The UK-based charity, Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT) has created an emergency Uyghur refugee appeal to help the fortunate few who have managed to escape. UWT is a reputable charity with a 100% donation policy.
In August 2020, UWT distributed approximately £500,000 to over 1,000 Uyghur families in Turkey. This money was delivered as cash grants. The amount distributed varied according to the number of members in each family. UWT also offered further support to widows, pregnant women and students.

This awareness campaign was created to highlight some of the atrocities currently occurring in East Turkestan (Xinjiang, China). Uyghur Muslims are subject to gross human rights abuses at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Despite overwhelming evidence of this cultural genocide, little has been done to resolve the crisis. This campaign aims to increase awareness and help bring this issue into the mainstream.
This initiative was inspired by the following narration from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ),
“Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.”
The Uyghurs are a majority Muslim Turkic ethnic group native to East Turkestan. Their Turkic origin means their culture, religion and language is unlike that of mainland China. In 1949, the East Turkestan Republic was incorporated into the People's Republic of China. The area has been under occupation since and is now referred to as the "Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region". Various groups within the area advocate for the establishment of an independent country, East Turkestan. Over the years, this has fuelled tension and ethnic strife in the region.
Since 2017, reports have been emerging of Uyghur people being sent to “re-education” camps by the Chinese government, where “extremist views” can be removed. Over a million Uyghurs are estimated to be in these camps. There are reports of Uyghur people being forced to drink alcohol, eat pork, shave their beards and being unable to practice Islam. Uyghur children have been separated from their families and sent to orphanages. Uyghur women have been forced to marry Han Chinese men. There are increasing reports of a programme involving the mass sterilisation of Uyghur women. Uyghurs are subject to mass-incarceration, indoctrination, forced labour and mass surveillance. Despite increasing evidence of gross human rights abuses, most of the world (including majority Muslim nations) remains silent.
In recent years, this issue has been brought before the United Nations on a number of occasions. In June 2020, the USA passed a Uyghur human rights bill, giving them the ability to impose sanctions on Chinese officials for their treatment of the Uyghur people.
During June/July 2020, the Uyghur cause started gaining momentum in the UK. However, many stipulate that it was motivated by rising political tensions between the "West" and China, and not entirely due to the human rights abuses of the Uyghur people.
This campaign firmly condemns individuals/organisations who use the plight of the Uyghurs for their own hidden agendas. The Uyghur cause is NOT an economic/geopolitical issue. This is a Humanitarian issue.
Please do not support/follow individuals who claim to support the Uyghur cause whilst simultaneously and intentionally ignoring the plight of many other oppressed groups (Palestinians, Black minorities, the Rohingya, Kashmiris, Yemenis…just to name a few). Please call out the selective outrage when you see it.
